Kia Ora!!

Kia Ora!
Apologies this week for the late email. Due to Labor Day, our dear Library is closed. Therefore, Sister Pointer and I are sharing a computer at the Paihia Chapel. Fun times! Ha. It's really not much different from jumping on and off computers every 30 minutes at the Library though! ;)
I hope all is well at home! It seems like the family Halloween Party was a BLAST!  Love all the costumes, fear factor-ness, and all the little stories that came with it. :) So exciting to hear about the fam - and I agree with the kids on the donut bobbing thing! I can't believe you dropped that one this year! Haha.... Just 'cause I'm not there to go up against Cayden anymore. ;) ;) Was Cade's costume one of the Beatles? Hah... Him and his long hair. Can't get over it!!
The last few weeks have FLOWN by. Wanna know what's weird? Transfers will be NEXT WEEK. What is this life? I'm almost done with 3 transfers. I don't understand. (P.S. Did I ever mention last week that I hit 4 months? Weird. Sauce.)
Fun facts and updates about my life with bugs this week: Bug bites are supposed to turn into scabs, and then - ya know, generally go away pretty fast after that, right? Yup. That's not a thing here. I think my skin is still adjusting to the humidity and therefore, they just soak up all the humidity and never go away. Fun times!  Also: Probably too much info. But, it's a struggle. So many bug bites!!
This week has been interesting though. Sister Pointer and I have both struggled  with the homesickness life, in all honesty. But: The thing that I've learned (and relearned) from this is this: PRAYER is truly a place of comfort. A place of just being able to talk and share ANYTHING YOU WANT with your dear Father in Heaven. I also had a fun little experience one night of insane "lonliness" in a sense of getting down, starting my prayer, just pausing and feeling these words of "How are you doing tonight Sister Ottley?" ....And then I broke down. But in a good way! He's truly there for each one of us. Our Father in Heaven and our Saviour, Jesus Christ, are THERE FOR US. And they speak to our hearts in a way that they know we will understand. Life is good. :) Even amid trial and struggles – we can get through anything with them on our side!
It definitely is hard at times to keep yourself motivated. But that's what music is for in my life. And our mission vision. And just finding things – yes, like hedgehogs and whatnot! It makes life all better. :)
Monday though. MAN. We officially have a NEW INVESTIGATOR. PARTY!! Miracles. Her name is Kayla.  And she's actually been a potential who we've tried to catch a few times until now – and we finally got her! :) And we're teaching her this week, and we're SO EXCITED. The cool thing about Kayla? When the previous Sisters (O'Reilly and Fornaro) first found her, they taught her and her boys about prayer. And what have they been doing? PRAYING. She says they pray almost every night, and her little 6-year-old, Kingston, will remind her when they haven't in a while. TOO CUTE. And I'm just so excited to teach her and the boys. :) Hopefully more to come next week! :)
We also had a really nice lesson with Tunisia this week. She's strong, and we're excited to continue in sharing with her. Because she RECOGNIZED the SPIRIT this week! She noted and told us about the warm feeling she was having. Greatness. :)
Sad note of the week: Pearl probably won't be getting baptized this week anymore.... But – no worries. We will continue. Because she definitely still has a desire and reads by herself. She's just hard to catch at her Nan's house, because that's where we teach her. We're excited to continue though!
Thursday we were lucky enough to have interviews with President and Sister Balli. :) They're just so wonderful. And you feel so loved and great with them always. President sees "into you" better than you realize – it's a little freaky. Haha. And he saw into me, telling me I'm too hard on myself, and that I need to be less self-critical. I honestly didn't ever think of things that way – until that moment. It's the perfectionist side of me that drives me insane sometime. Haha. But all is well. :) He gave me some lovely things to study and all is well. :)
Friday we were in Matauri Bay, and we were able to catch up with Sonny and TeAniwa Randell. A SUPER newlywed couple, and MAN they're cute! They live out in the middle of nowhere on a little farm though – so that was fun to find!  #adventuresonthedirtroads. But they're super sweet. Pretty recently just moved into the Matauri Branch, so we're excited to get to know them better. :)
Saturday was the beginning of the Labor Day weekend – starting off with a HUGE concert in Paihia with "The Black Seeds" headlining — someone will have to tell me if they're any good? I was too focused on the RAIN everywhere else around me. Ha. And laughing at all the people who were SO into the concert and DRENCHED. Because really – it rained SO HARD, and pretty much all day Saturday!
We also did a bit of tracting in Haruru Falls Saturday. And there were some.... interesting people we met. Mostly people that just told us to go away. But, here's the thing. Yes, we get rejected – that's fine. Whatever. The thing that drives me insane is when people go off on a rant/lecture of "why your religion is wrong" – and then proceed to tell you the "history that you haven't read about" and "why you don't know what you're talking about" ....And then as you politely tell them "thank you for talking with us" and ask if "there is anything you need, or if you know anyone that may need help or service" – they tell you off! That it's "not about helping – it's about walking with them." ...And continuing on that essentially you need to respect people. ...I'm sorry. Are you being any kind of respectful to me right now? Nope. No you are not. My apologies. Rant over. I have no problem with tracting. It's honestly not always the most effective way of doing things in life, but it's good. There's just certain moments when you're sick of people telling you you're wrong, when you know so clearly and full-heartedly that you are RIGHT.
This lady we talked to did make me think though. About how we can better listen to the spirit and figure out different ways of phrasing things for people of different religions – because how something is phrased can truly change how someone talks to you.
Sunday turned into a day of Facsimilies. Ha. Ya know the Egyptian drawings in Abraham? Well, President Jon Smith (counselor in our Stake presidency, and in our Paihia branch) studied them in school (BYU-H) and continues now. He does CLASSES about them. SO cool. And so he taught us a little about them when we went over to their house for lunch Sunday afternoon. So fun to watch him get all excited about teaching us a few things! (He actually reminds me a LOT of Casey.)
As for my birthday... Letters from people. Or drawings. That I can look at. :) Or "Open when" letters — tell the girls that this was BRILLIANT, and I love them – love love love! They make all things better in life, always.
AND. NETFLIX GILMORE? WHAT... Okay. I'm excited for this. There will be MUCH marathoning in 14 months! :)
Anyhoo. Life is good.  Prayer is brilliant, and I don't know where I would be without it. Also: Ponderize of the week: Alma 32:41. All about FAITH - and of course IN A VISUAL WAY, because that's how I am. I'm thinking I may start making visual representations of my ponderize scriptures as well. ..,We'll see how much time I can make for that. ;) (HA!)
I love and miss you all. The gospel is SO true. There is no doubt in my mind. Even with the people that stop us, quiz us, and tell us why we're wrong—the gospel is true. I feel it in my life every day. There is always some little miracle that will bring a smile to your face, if you just look for it. It makes me laugh when people mention or ask "why we're so happy" –and that's just it. It's because of the gospel. :)

I hope you have a most wonderful week, and press forward!

Arohanui,Sister Mckenzie Ann Ottley"But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish the tree as it beginneth to grow, by your faith with great diligence, and with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life." —Alma 32:41

Another Week and A Hedgehog!

KIA ORA!
My dear whanau, I miss you all dearly.  But New Zealand is beautiful, and beginning to bloom into the SUMMER MONTHS. Is this still weird for me? Yes. Yes it is. Because the concept of "Summer in October" is just weird. Also: New Zealanders don't super celebrate Halloween. So that's throwin' me off a little. We were talking with one of our Young Women, Kaea Ngakuru, a week or so ago about it, and she was rather jealous about the fact that we actually DO Halloween. Haha. I told her she'd have to come visit Utah and I'd bring her around for a real Halloween!

It's been a good week though. Trade offs, talking with Pounamu (a sneaky member), dinner with President Going & Family, and a CRUISE SHIP in Paihia. Whaaaa. Cruise ships are HUGE! I never even thought about just how BIG they would be in for real life.

Oh. And a hedgehog. :)

We started out the week with Tradeoffs with our dear Sister Training Leaders, Sister Allen and Paasi. Fun fact: Sister Paasi was suppposed to go home last transfer.  She extended. Ha. But – she's also FROM New Zealand, actually from within our mission boundaries next to Auckland. So – that'll be interesting for her to go "home!" But I traded off with Sister Paasi, and it was brilliant. She helped me in new ways of how to talk with all the people on the streets, including tourists and people in the area. It was brilliant. (Also: Thank you for all the answers from everyone else!! SO super helpful!) I'm slowly but surely coming out of my shell a little more in loving talking with everyone. I just have to have faith that there will always be someone that will actually stop and talk with us!

Wednesday and Thursday were a bit "slap-happy" due to Monday night's lack of sleep waiting for the STL's to get to our flat and get settled in. Ha.... But: One exciting thing that came from the slap-happiness was finding HARVEY THE HEDGEHOG. Fun Fact: Hedgehogs just roam in the wild here. And they're adorable. And I love them. But Sister Pointer found one on the side of the road in a patch of grass as we were getting out of the car Wednesday. And there was much rejoicing and picture taking. It's the little things in life folks! :)

We bumped into our friend, Pounamu, this week again as well – did I tell you about him? He's in Paihia working until December, normally from Whangarei. But we TWE'd him one day to find that he's indeed a member. He just got back from his mission at the beginning of this year actually. (Ha) But he knew about general conference - so that's what clued us into the fact that he HAD to be a member. Yes. Truth. Anyhoo. He's lovely. We're hoping to catch him again to see if he wants to come to our church while he's here for work! Also to see if he wants to be a missionary again and find people for us to teach!

Friday was a 'SLOW AS' day in Matauri. Man. Struggles. Still trying to figure out best ways to work in Matauri. But the work moves on. Sister Pointer saw Daniel this week while she was with Sister Allen, and it seemed to go well. They talked about prayer. We're hoping that by repeating concepts now, that he'll come back along in the way of wanting to set a baptism date again. But little by little – it'll all work out. :)

So, Friday was discouraging for me. In all honesty. Because it was a day of "no one is home, no one wants to talk to us, and even the members are on their way out right now." But – all is well. The work continues on. And I moved on. :)

Saturday we had dinner at PRESIDENT GOING'S (Paihia Branch President).  President Going is great. It's just been a little more difficult for me to get to know him than it has been to get to know President Himiona (Matauri Bay Branch). But we were at the chapel for lunch when Mel  (Sister Going) came over to clean. And she invited us over for dinner – because "it's President's night to cook." "President cooks??"  "Yes. And tonight is probably BBQ." WIN. Yup, it was delicious. And he definitely does cook. Haha. But it was fun to get to know their family a little better, and he also gave us a referral! A little family in Haruru Falls. We called them Saturday afternoon, and set up an appointment for SUNDAY. He was ready – we were a little shocked at how fast he gave us a day and a time for said appointment But it was good.

So Sunday we asked in Relief Society if anyone would be able to come out and teach with us – because our dear referral told us his "partner would be out – so it would just be him and the boys." Aka: We need a woman to come with us. Come to find out, Camilla knows the family quite well. So she came! And she drove us there. (Happiness because we have to keep track of the amount of km's we drive each month....we're only allotted 2700. Which sounds like a lot, but is sometimes difficult with how large our areas are.) So we went out. Anddddd Brendon and the kids were'nt there. :( Sad face. But we gave him a call, and he apologized, because "something came up" – but all is well. We set a new appointment for this Thursday. And it's going to be great. :) We're SUPER excited. Because: FAMILY.

Anyhoo. It's been a lovely week. :) Oh yeah – and once again, there's a Cruise Ship in Paihia.  (Or at least there was yesterday.) And it's HUGE. Apparently there will be about 50+ that come in between now and ....March? I think? I'm still getting used to what months are summer..... But the crazy tihng about it is that Camilla was telling us that it's not the biggest one that comes either! There's some that aren't allowed to go past the Russell Island because of how big they are!  Aka: You can SEE THE SHIP OVER THE TOP OF THE ISLAND FROM PAIHIA. This just blows my mind. Anyhoo. I'm hoping to get a picture of some ships for you this week, as I'm sure there will be more coming in now!

Please assure Brett and Ashley that I know he was serious with his TWE replies! I understand the Brett talk – I have known him for most of my life!

And also: Bugs are still the death of me.
This week went like this: I washed my sheets and then the following night I got bitten by something all over my arm. Isn't that supposed to happen BEFORE the washing of the sheets?  #makesnosense.  Haha. But all really is okay. I just am sick of all the itch. I'll just have to keep learning to embrace the buggy-ness!

Tell the girls I miss updates from them! I would also like an update of Cayden specifically. Because: HAPPY #18 TO THE KID THIS WEEK! What?  This cannot be a thing!

Much love and blessings. :) I hope all is well back home, and I hope yous all are enjoying your PONDERIZING. I know I am. :)

Arohanui,
Sister Mckenzie Ann Ottley

GENERAL CONFERENCE

GUYS, GENERAL CONFERENCE WAS BRILLIANT! I was totally jealous of you all last week, 'cause, man, just hearing little tid-bits made me want all the things. But no worries, I've caught up now to the rest of yous back home, and it feels great! :) We're so SPOILED in Utah, man! (And in said surrounding area) I mean, I suppose – there ARE people here who get to watch it live as well – but not many do, considering the time it would be at.

Anyhoo. Conference was brilliant! I think this is literally the most excited I have ever been for General Conference!

Last MONDAY for P-day we went to the Stone Store again. It's beautiful – and we actually got to go into the STORE part this time. Haha. We also had to bring our dear Flo (our car) to the doctor (Ford dealership). Because she's been struggling. But all is well! She just had some rocks and dirt stuck in her – which resulted in making awful grinding noises and struggling up hills. This is more than likely due to our lives on dirt roads and large pot-holes in Matauri Bay. :) We also met up with the district before the Stone Store at this ice-cream place in Waipapa. There's different ice-cream challenges you can do there – and Elder Shannon TOOK ONE ON. 15 (or maybe even 16?) scoops of ice-cream (and the owner of this place – man, his version of a "scoop" is GIANT!). And Elder Shannon ate it in SIXTEEN MINUTES!! He looked like he was going to die afterwards and Sister Pointer was convinced he was going to spew – but, he's strong. And man – I still can't even believe he did it!!

TUESDAY'S wisdom from District Meeting? From Elder Shannon: "Do your best and the Lord will do the rest!" –And then he mentioned that he's heard that quote from someone before, but couldn't remember who – so we could just attribute it to him. Haha. He's a funny one. :) But this came about as we all talked about the TWE goal for the week. (And this is where one of your "Stake President Tips" came into play this week mum!) We were challenged by our Zone/District leaders to "get 700 TWE collectively between the zone for the week." That's 100 TWE per companionship!! What's "TWE" you ask? TWE = "TALK WITH EVERYONE!" Yup. It's a struggle for me. And I was overwhelmed by the idea. And stressing – in all honesty. Not because I'm not getting better at it, but because "100" was a large number! ...But – more to come on this note later. :)

Our dear Zone Leaders, Elder Crane and Chong-nee, came over Wednesday for a companion study – because, lets be real, Elder Crane has an eye and a spiritual talent for "seeing into Sister Ottley's soul and knowing when she's going to break down next." – No worries. There was no breakdown. Ha. But they came over and helped us with ideas of how to TWE. And they even then went out with us to TWE for a bit in Kerikeri. #helpfulthings. It was great.

Anoter great moment with meeting people in Keri this fine morning – Sister Pointer and I helped a couple who were setting up a booth for "Kiwi Awareness Month." AND... I GOT TO SEE A KIWI BIRD!! Granted, it was stuffed – as in taxidermy-style. But, at least I've offically seen what a real Kiwi bird looks like, and how big they are. Now my true search can begin....  And the man we talked to about kiwis and the gospel was really sweet. Not interested right now – but talked with us about a few things. :)

As our WEDNESDAY continued on, and we talked with more people on the streets than we have in a while, (and it's still a trial for me – mostly because I just don't like bugging people that are clearly busy or on their way somewhere). But we took it in stride. And met some lovely people!

We also got to see our dear Stella Kake – a member in Paihia. And we had a great talk with her. And I just love her SO much. Also – side note: She's going to take us and the Clements' POSSUM TRAPPING one P-day in the future.  #thingsineverthoughtiwoulddo #especiallyonthemission #what?

We also saw Aunty Apiata (Wednesdays are generally pretty packed for us). And have I ever told you about her crazy cool spiirtual gifts? She's able to see the "pain and inner beauty" of anyone and everyone. Example? I walk into her house, give her a hug, as we sit down on the couch, she looks at me and says, "Is your back sore?" ....I hadn't done anything to make her see that. Haha. But she's sweet – and gave me some new things to make my back not sore. I don't know what I would do without my dear Aunty. :) (She also calls me her niece now. Haha.)

We finally got to see Daniel THURSDAY – it's been a while, sadly. But guess what? He STOPPED SMOKING —— for three days. And started again. BUT it's a start! And we're excited. Because we know he can do it. And his parents are apparently trying to quit as well – *blessings* So, we're hoping that support will help him in the ways of continuously trying to quit as well.

We also visited Daniel's baby LAMBS. Theyre' just too cute. I can't handle it. And I got a picture of them. And a video.

FRIDAY was spent in the flat. :( Sister Pointer's knee was acting up and therefore, we called Sister Bath (our new medical mum!) and she said, "Stay in, and get better!" – But we had to go out to get some ibuprofen and whatnot to make the inflamation go down.... (Fun fact: It's hard to find ice-packs and ace bandages here in the north... not sure about somewhere closer to Auckland. But it was a struggle.) And then we iced, propped up, and rested her knee for the day. Sister Pointer has a knee injury that acts up sometimes...(sad face for her). So - we studied things, and made wall collages out of old Ensign pictures that have been left in the flat. ART. So of course I was in heaven. And my wall is now filled with uplifting pictures that make me happy. Also: This painting I found in an Ensign by Liz Lemon Swindle (SHE'S MY FAVOURITE OF ALL FAVOURITE) of Emma and Joseph. It's called "But In a Small Moment" ...? I think? Something along those lines. It's beautiful. And I hope to actually own a real print of it one day.

Then: SATURDAY and SUNDAY, oh my heart. General Conference. It was brilliant. And I nearly cried watching President Monson – but I was grateful for the warning mum. Because I would have been ONLY panicking, rather than listening to his beautiful words on being a light during that beautiful Sunday morning session.  I'm grateful and excited for the new apostles that addressed us, and I'm excited to get to know them by how they speak as I have the others!

Also: PONDERIZING. How BRILLIANT is that? I'm so excited. What's everyone's scriptures going to be this week? I'm still deciding.... But I'm thinking D&C 84:85-86. The Spirit in Missionary work! :)

"Neither take ye thought beforehand what ye shall say; but treasure up in your minds continually the words of life, and it shall be given you in the very hour that portion that shall be meted unto every man. ... Therefore, let no man among you, for this commandment is unto all the faithful who are called of God in the church unto the ministry, from this hour take purse or scrip, that goeth forth to proclaim this gospel of the kingdom." —D&C 84:85-86

We were also very loved by our dear Paihia branch this weekend, and invited for multiple meals! Camilla and Boss Going and Albie and Heather Dixon invited us for both meals Sunday – and it was lovely to get to know them all a bit better. Sister Pointer and I have decided we want to be like Camilla when we grow up. (Ha) — She's Sister and Brother White's daughter. They have 4 ADORABLE children: Ezekiel, Sarai, Xavier, and Kyla. OH the adorableness.

So it's been a wonderful week. And I'm excited for the continuing things that help us along in the future. I was overwhelmed in the beginning with our TWE goals. And in the end, we honestly didn't make it to 100 as a companionship. HOWEVER. One of the things I have gained from this challenge this week is that: THERE ARE BLESSINGS THAT COME FROM TRYING. We tried harder than we have been – and the Lord not only led us to people, but led people to us! Did you CATCH that?? There were actually people that CAME TO US!! (These things almost never happen.) It's been grand though. :) We also found out that there was a CRUISE SHIP that came in on Friday....the day we were in the flat. #sadthings But more people are starting to come out with the LOVERLY and BEAUTIFUL weather we are having. :) (How's your October in Utah? Haha.) It's still weird for me that it's October and going into summer.....

Anyhooo. I'll stop rambling. Each week I tell myself, "Okay – you're going to be better about not talking for ten years." Ha. Fail. But – Mum, I partially blame you for all my words I have to share. ;) (But of course – not a bad blame.) A good one. ;) The writer side of me actually coming through!  –Speaking of, there's a poem that's been forming in my mind this week. About happiness. We'll see what comes of it. ;)

And one more thing I i forgot to mention: MIRACLE MUD. TELL EVERYONE THEY SHOULD CONVERT TO REDMOND CLAY! Haha. It takes away the itch of bugs!! There were a few nights last week I couldn't sleep because the flea bites were itching SO MUCH – but then I started putting on mud and washing it off before bed – and no more waking up!! It's amazing stuff! And just brilliant!

Arohanui,
Sister Mckenzie Ottley :)

PS. "Arohanui" is the basically the equivalent of "Love you HEAPS!" ;)

"LOOK UP! GOD DIDN'T DESIGN US TO BE SAD!"

WOMEN'S CONFERENCE. It was brilliant!  I finally got to watch it yesterday (Sunday. Ha.) And it was wonderful. And I'm pretty much just jealous of everyone at home who has now watched General Conference, and I haven't.... But! NEXT WEEK! I'm waiting ... patiently. But only patiently because I have no other choice but to be patient!

It's been a good, weird, painful week.  Haha. "Painful" in the sense of my back acting up - and my foot struggling in life. "Good" in the way of people we've been able to meet with and the members that we're becoming better friends with - and "Weird" in the way of just the combination of the two making it weird. Haha.

Things this week: I got my first New Zealand sunburn! Yay...?! Ha. It really wasn't that bad though - but Sister Pointer, who is indeed also very fair skinned, didn't get as burned as me... so - #mylife. But it was all for a good cause because we got to do a ZONE SERVICE PROJECT! We helped out in a potential investigator's garden for the other sister's in our district. Her name is Sharon, and she has a GORGEOUS and HUGE garden/path area in her backyard that's been all grown-over and needed some help. So we got to garden. And I found some spiders that I could have done without seeing in my life. But all is well! (I still haven't witnessed a Weta—NZ insect, so we're all good there. *knocks on wood* Look them up. They're gross.) And btw: Forget-me-nots are EVERYWHERE here - and I love them. :)

Tuesday continued in Matauri Bay, driving around with our dear Sister Laura Himiona. The funny quote from her in the day was, "Hey Sisters, - Is your car open? I'll have Nevaeh put the car seat in for Hope." Me: "Oh! I'll get the keys!" Laura: "Of course it's not unlocked - you're American." (The differences between New Zealanders and Americans) ;)

Wednesday we FINALLY caught up with a guy that I've been trying to catch for WEEKS. He's been a potential investigator for...who knows how long, among the sisters. And he's one that's truly strengthened my testimony in the way that "planting seeds and even just VISITING people truly DOES WORK." His name is James Puru, and he told us stories of how when the sisters first started visiting he'd basically run away - or tell them he was busy, and such like that. The last sisters that talked with him got a few lessons in, but he was put off when they asked about baptism - too fast for him. But now he's told us he's ready - but also said straight out it's going to take him a while until he can commit to baptism, because he wants to do it right! He's golden. :) And I'm so excited to keep teaching him. It's also quite brilliant, because Sister Pointer KNOWS HIS DAUGHTERS. One of them, Aroha, is a member in the Owahau Branch, and the other is investigating... They're all wonderful. And there's some great connections that's helping this along. :)

I ALSO decorated my new planner. :) A "Stay By The Tree" theme from April's conference. With the scripture reference of Moroni 10:32. It's a good one!

"Come unto Christ, and be perfected in him. ... Love God with all your might, mind and strength. ... That by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ." —Moroni 10:32

Thursday. LOQUAT. It's a fruit. I'm honestly not sure if that's how you spell it. But... that's what I got for ya since I can't look it up. Ha But they're really quite delicious. I'm a fan. Kinda citrus-y, but also more like... kiwi-y? No.  I don't know. It's hard to explain. Little, yellow, ovals and they have pits inside. Sometimes an impressive amount of pits for how small they are! And I've DEFINITELY eaten lamb. Haha. A lot. I've probably had it more than chicken at this point in time!

Friday was Zone Training, and SO great. All about Accountability, Planning and Goal setting. But - Friday was also a struggle for me. As.... my back has been struggling lately. And Friday it was just in pain. And it was making me exhausted. And I lost it a little. And then Elder Shannon (my new district leader) gave me a blessing at the end of Training. And it was everything I needed to hear - from being able to gain strength to continue on, to gaining knowledge and the answers that will come to me as I keep going. It was brilliant. It calmed me. But - I also was still in pain.  So, we called Sister Beckstead (who finishes her mission this month, by the way.... it's going to be sad without her. But the new sister nurse I'm sure will also be just lovely.:) ) And she said to "Take some ibuprofen, get a hot waterbottle and lay on it for an hour to get the inflamation down and settle it." ...So we did. We dropped by The Warehouse to get a hot waterbottle on our way back from Zone Training, went back to the flat and I did just that. We ended up stayin' in for the rest of the day - just giving my back a rest because... struggles.  And it ended up helping a lot I feel.  I've been up and out since then and it's gaining more strength with different stretches that I'm now getting MUCH better at doing..... #slacker.

But like I said - the work moves on. Saturday we were able to connect with one of our potentials who I haven't seen in AGES. Because... he's never home. Ken is his name, and we found him while we were out talking with people on the streets. He was at a picnic table preparing his flax to be weaved into a bag. :) He's great. And so creative, and we're hoping to run into him again soon - when he actually has a phone that's not broken/lost... Ha.  The funny part about this, and a quote that will never be forgotten is "Cuddles are good" ...Yup. I forgot that Ken is one who we haven't figured out how to tell that as Sisters we're technically not allowed to hug men.... and he just goes in for the hug before you realize what's happening.  And this is what he said to us as we went to give him a handshake. So, friends - "cuddles are good"  Hahaha.... Obstacles we'll be working through in the future. :P

Saturday night also brought me back to my old days of getting lost and calling Dad, saying "I'm here - tell me how to get _______." Remember those times Dad? Haha... Yup. Except my "Dad" here in Paihia is now Elder Clements. We were trying to find a member's home - the Dicksons. And..... we were helplessly lost. I called Elder Clements (who we'd already called once earlier, looking for another home -- that one we found) and after trying to explain it for a second - he just stopped and said, "Okay. Here's what I want you to do. I want you to go back to your car, drive to the top of Opua, and Sister Clements and I will come meet you there and lead you to the Dickson's home."  ..>Hahahaha... #mylife. #directionallychallenged. But they got us there, and it was a lovely night. :)

Sunday: WOMEN'S CONFERENCE. I've already mentioned my love for this day.  But it truly was just so wonderful. I wish this happened more than every six months. Really. It lifted and helped me and was just so wonderful. A favourite quote is definitely, "God didn't design us to be sad!" --- TRUTH.  He designed us to be happy. He designed us to learn, grow, and gain experience. And that's what we're here to share as missionaries. That God wants us all to be happy.  :) ALL the love. Hope and faith = confidence. TRUTH.

Anyhoo. My thoughts are just going to become bullet points now. As I'm running out of time... (Holidays are a struggle at the library with all the billions of children using the computers...) But I love you all. The work is real, I'm so grateful for it - regardless of the hard things we go through, and the for honestly truthful homesickness I've felt a bit of this week (because of our normal General Conference traditions). - I will say, that I'm a bit shocked by the fact that it hasn't really hit me until now. But I know that as I learn to lose myself MORE in the work, it'll all get better. :) Life is grand. The work is real, and I'm so grateful for it. :)

MUCH LOVE! HAVE A BEAUTIFUL WEEK!

Arohanui,
Sister Ottley :)

EXCITING ANIMALS IN AOTEAROA! :)

"I wish I was a glowworm,
A glowworm's never glum.
'Cause how could you be grumpy,
When the sun shines out your bum??!"

I SAW GLOWWORMS LAST MONDAY! Yup. They only exist in New Zealand and Australia. (Multiple kinds in Australia - only one kind in NZ.) But they're SO COOL. And fun fact: They spin webs of sorts like spiders - but more into a hammock type thing that they lay in, and then they drop one single strand down that bugs fly into and get stuck and they "suck them up like spaghetti!" - as our tour guide said :)  Haha... So many great times! :) Glowworm caves in Kawiti :)  BEST. Highly recommend it.

Also: Ruapekapeka Pa. It's a Maori battleground of trenches — And a really impressively pretty area. Kind of cool to see the ways trenches were all built together, and how deep they were as well - I definitely had a couple of close calls of falling in... but that's me for ya!

TRANSFERS: Transfers are officially complete, and I am officially staying in Paihia and Matauri Bay!!! (Rejoicing angel choirs singing above!) Sad things of transfers though: My Pop left me.  (Aka: Elder Summers — in the scheme of my "missionary genealogy" as my first district leader, he's my dad.... which also makes him my husband because I started traning under him as well — but that's just something we look past. :P) Our Dear Elder Summers (aka: Minion) has left us to Panmeur. But he's going to be wonderful as a district leader down there, and I know we'll see him again one day!

I love it here in the north though. And never want to leave. I don't know how to handle a lot of people anymore. Haha... But I can tell you one thing: This new life of the holiday season starting up is going to pull me out of that in Paihia! "Why?" you ask?  ---> TOURISTS! Because: It's SPRING! Still crazy weird and confusing for my poor little Utah mind - because going into October is usually... cold. However, it's nice and sunny and warm - but honestly only when the sun is out. The second the sun goes behind a cloud, it gets chilly again - so that's also a new feeling.

Anyhoo - It's been a great week! Sister Pointer and I have pulled ourselves up and out of hard times and are moving forward toward new goals. Sad news of the week though: Ethan wasn't able to be baptized this weekend. :( He was away most of the week at sea, and also because President Going (our Branch President) didn't feel he was quite ready yet.... (Even though he totally is.) But we're still hopeful for it happening soon!  He's apparently going away this week for the holiday to spend time with his pop, but he'll be back. And we'll catch him again, and I'm determined that he WILL get baptized before I leave!

Sister Pointer and I were able to do a bit of Family History this week as well - not quite as helpful as we were hoping to be in the time we were there, but we did figure out a few things that were hindering our poor Eddy and Kathy (two members in Matauri Bay). So that was fun! It was also this day that I learned (yet again) how prayer TRULY works. Ha. Because, see- at first nothing was working. At alll. Then I realized, "Hey, we haven't said a prayer" - and so we did. And things started working! So.... That's pretty cool. :)

Sister Pointer is from Cedar City and shes been out since February. :) ...Or, well, technically that's when she went into the MTC in Provo (for Maori language). So she's been in the field since March. :) She's wonderful:) ... similar to me in the ways of being a hippie - does the whole essential oils thing, tai chi, muscle testing, etc. It's great. :) She's 21, and everything is going great!

Also, funny things of how I still haven't changed:

Sister Pointer: Also, you will have to feed your companion at some point.
Me: Ah... I'm sorry you get a companion that forgets about food.
Sister Pointer: Do you SEE this badge?? *Pointing to the Samoan missionary badge*

And it's confirmed: We don't watch conference until the following week.... So you'll have to tell me special things to watch for. ;)

Wednesday this week resulted in going to....RUSSELL!  I love Russell. Even though we really only go once a transfer. It's so pretty and happy. And also new people that we haven't seen! We were also able to have lunch at Clive's (a Paihia branch member) - which was the biggest "lunch" I think I've ever eaten!! Fresh seafood chowder (YUM), pork chop, salad (with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and spinach), kumera pie (YUM— Aussie version of pumpkin pie), and for dessert? Fish dessert :) ....What's fish dessert you ask? We also asked that. And then Clive came out with a dish of ice-cream with a chocolate-covered-marshmallow fish on top. Hahahaha... He just loved seeing the worried look in our eyes when he said "fish dessert!" It was a lovely day though, and we were able to meet some of Clive's friends, as well as some tourists and others in Russell - there's a lot of exchange-students over here from Germany right now - so there were a few girls we were lucky enough to talk with.  It was wonderful! :)

There were also a couple days this week that were spent partially in the flat, due to sickness in Sister Pointer's life. Which was sad. Because I can do nothing but give her oils. But - they're also miracle workers, because she was able to perk up for a half day both days. :) And we got some great work done! (Or - at least a lot more people seen than we thought we'd be able to!)

We also had exciting times learning more flax weaving from Aunty Apiata (I made a box!). And then... the epic day of Saturday...

Running around inviting a bunch of people to a "feed" we were having at the Piahia chapel, trying to get more people to come and see a little bit what we were about. It was a fun day - as we also walked around most everywhere, becaues it was BEAUTIFUL out. LOVED it! We had a grand day of visiting less actives, others around, and also a young, new-convert couple who just moved to Waitangi from Whangarei. And they're ADORABLE. The kind of couple I've always wanted to meet — James is COVERED in tattoos. Tayla also has some. And they have an adorable little girl named Sophie. :) I'm SUPER excited to get to know them better. And hopefully get them coming to our branch now (they're pretty shy).

RANDOM THINGS of Saturday: - Sister Pointer "SAW A BLACK SWAN" - and freaked out. It was pretty funny. :) We also ate KINA (aka: Sea urchin). It's actually really quite good. And we ate it as fresh as you can get man. Bel broke one open and popped it in a container and told us we could try it. (She's another less active we're trying to activate...love her to death.) Also, LORD OF THE RINGS VAN.  Here's the thing with tourist season. There's even MORE backpackers/people who live out of vans that come around. And there was one on Saturday painted in murals of Lord of the Rings references. There was SO much happiness in the nerd side of me!! Next, BUTTON THE LAMB. ...I've officially "fed the sheep" - literally, an apple - and then the Book of Mormon. She's an adorable little lamb, and partially owned by the partner of one of our less actives (yes- there's truly a lot of less actives...) And he's super nice.  His name is Anthony and when we found out it was his sheep, he told us we could take a picture with her, and brought us the apple for her treat. :)  Happiness!! :)

Sunday we were lucky enough to give talks/testimony in our Paihia branch. :)  It was actually really nice - andddddd ROZANNE CAME AGAIN! Because she loves us. And supports us. And just makes us so happy. And she has FRIENDS in our branch now! - so... there's even more hope now. Also because she also STAYED FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL and MADE COMMENTS IN SUNDAY SCHOOL.  She's golden - she just doesn't know it yet. ;) I love her. And I truly need to get a picture with her soon so I can show her cute little face to all of you.

ALSO. About Elder Scott. SADNESS. WHY ARE THEY ALL LEAVING AT THE SAME TIME!?? And Sister Pointer and I have decided to bring up a "TELL THE MISSIONARIES THINGS" plan — because we're LITERALLY always the last to know anything happening in the Church! We didn't find out until... Saturday night that Elder Scott had passed away. To which we both practically screamed "WHAT??" ...So: This is our plan to tell President Balli this week: That it should be a RULE that a MASS TEXT goes out so that we ALL KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON IN OUR CHURCH #endofrant :) [Whats popular right now!]

Anyhoo. So: It's been a grand week. :) And we're excited for the upcoming one. New goals, new people, and lots of tourists that I have a feeling we'll be talking to.  Spring is here, and Summer is approaching!

Tell our home teachers and the entire ward hello - I miss them all! Also: I kind of miss being in a ward in general.  Ha. Though I do love my little branches. It's much easier to speak in front of them! 😉 ...I just discovered these smiley face things, in case you didn't notice... haha. 😁 The extent of my technology!

I hope you have a most brilliant week filled with joy, happiness, and miracles beyond your imagination. :)

Life is grand in Aotearoa (Maori name for New Zealand)! I love it lots. :) Kisses! 😘

Arohanui (Big Love),
Sister Makikenihi Ottley :)
